80,000 homes are already acting like a power plant

This is the LONG/RUN thesis in a single example, and the reason we do not write about distributed power plants in the future tense.
In July 2026 Sunrun announced that its California distributed power plant had expanded to more than 80,000 participating households and over 110,000 home batteries, providing up to 425 MW of peak dispatchable capacity. The programme launched in 2024 with approximately 16,000 enrolled customers — roughly fivefold growth in two years.

Nationally the picture is the same shape. Sunrun has reported more than 100,000 customers participating across 18 distributed power plant programmes during 2025, dispatching nearly 18 GWh into grids.
So the useful question was never whether distributed power plants might eventually work. It is how valuable they can become.
